CHINESE LANTERNS

Custom Chinese Lantern Materials | Steel, Fabric and LED Specifications

A lantern festival stands outdoors for six to twelve weeks. Rain, frost, wind, sun. The materials decide whether it still looks good on week twelve or starts sagging on week two. Every component we use is selected for how it performs under real outdoor conditions — not how it photographs in a catalogue. We own the workshop — the same one that produces every custom lantern we deliver. We specify the steel grade, the fabric density, the LED configuration. Nobody else gets a vote.

Steel Frames: The Skeleton

Steel frame welding and assembly in the Zigong lantern workshop

Each lantern begins as a welded steel frame. Not bamboo. Not plastic tubing. structural-grade steel — the same classification used in structural engineering — hand-welded against full-scale paper templates in our Zigong workshop. A single large sculpture — a five-metre dragon, a walk-through archway — starts as hundreds of individually bent and welded steel rods before a single piece of fabric touches it.

Frames are treated with anti-corrosion coatings as standard. For venues in coastal or high-humidity environments, we specify galvanised steel. The frame of a typical centrepiece carries significant weight before lighting and fabric are added — that weight is deliberate. It anchors the sculpture against wind, keeps it stable on uneven ground, and ensures it does not shift during a six-week run. For a detailed look at how the frames are built, see our manufacturing process.

Fabric Covering: The Skin

Once the steel skeleton is complete, artisans stretch and stitch the fabric covering by hand. The standard material is a high-density satin fabric — chosen for how it diffuses LED light. It produces the characteristic warm glow that defines a Chinese lantern festival: bright enough to read by up close, soft enough to photograph without glare.

Every piece of fabric is treated with waterproof and UV-protectant coatings before it leaves the workshop. Without this step, colours fade within days under direct sun. With it, a red lantern stays red through December and January. For venues in extreme climates — Middle Eastern summer sun, Scandinavian winter damp — we offer reinforced polymer fabrics that hold their colour and tension across multi-week runs without maintenance.

LED Lighting: The Glow

All our installations use purpose-built LED arrays. These are not off-the-shelf Christmas lights. They are waterproof LED modules designed specifically for large-scale outdoor lantern displays — a product category that barely exists outside Zigong. Each diode is tested individually before installation. Each circuit is checked again before packing.

LEDs use a fraction of the power of equivalent incandescent bulbs. For a venue operator, that number translates directly: a twenty-installation trail draws roughly 40 to 60 kilowatts total. Comparable to a small commercial kitchen. No generator hum. No electricity bill that eats your F&B margin — our botanical garden installations run 45 installations on roughly 52 kW, with a nightly electricity cost of approximately £120.

Colour temperature is controlled at the design stage. Warm white for traditional animal sculptures. Cool white for ice-themed winter scenes. RGB arrays for interactive zones where the lighting shifts in response to visitor movement. Every LED specification is written into the design brief before manufacturing begins.

Weatherproofing: Built for Where You Are

Custom lantern design and manufacturing

Every outdoor installation is weather-sealed as standard. Electrical connections are waterproofed. Fabrics are coated against moisture. Steel is treated against rust. For venues with specific environmental challenges, materials are adjusted at the specification stage — not retrofitted on site.

Cold climates get cold-resistant cabling and galvanised steel frames rated for sustained sub-zero temperatures. Middle Eastern venues get UV-treated fabrics rated for extended sun exposure. Sites near water or in regions with heavy snow get ground-level components sealed to a higher specification. There is no one-size-fits-all material list. There is a material specification written for your venue’s climate, your event’s duration, and your local permitting requirements.

All electrical work complies with the standards required for your jurisdiction. We provide full documentation — wiring diagrams, fire safety certificates, structural calculations — for your venue’s permitting process. CE compliance documentation is standard for European installations.

Why Material Choice Matters

A trading company will tell you their lanterns are “high quality.” That means whatever the factory they are buying from happened to use that month. We own the workshop. We specify the steel grade, the fabric density, the LED configuration. When a venue in Birmingham needs installations that survive British winter rain, and a venue in Dubai needs silk that will not bleach under Gulf sun, those are different material briefs — and we write both from the same workshop floor.

The difference between a lantern that looks good on opening night and one that looks good on closing night — twelve weeks later — is the materials. Everything else is marketing. See how this translates to a real installation: Birmingham Botanical Gardens case study.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do the materials last?

Steel frames are built for multiple event seasons. Fabric panels are designed to be inspected between seasons and replaced when needed. LED arrays have a long service life, measured in seasons rather than weeks.

What maintenance is required during an event?

Routine checks are minimal. A fabric panel can be replaced on site if needed. We supply spare panels and LED drivers with every installation, and our support team is available throughout your event run.

Can materials be customised for different climates?

Yes. Cold climates get cold-resistant cabling and corrosion-protected frames. Hot, sunny venues get UV-treated fabrics. Coastal sites get additional rust protection. Every installation brief includes a climate-specific material specification.
