CHINESE LANTERNS

About Yunyi Culture Co., Ltd — Custom Lantern Festival Manufacturer for Venues Worldwide

Yunyi Culture Co., Ltd designs, manufactures, and installs custom lantern festivals for botanical gardens, zoos, and venues worldwide. We are not an event hire company. We are not a trading agent who buys from a factory and marks up the price. We own the 30,000 m² workshop in Zigong, China where every sculpture is built. From the first site sketch to the final de-rig, you deal with one team. No subcontractors. No handoffs.

What factory-direct means for your venue. When a trading company quotes you a price, roughly 30–50% of that figure is their margin. They never touch the steel. They never visit the workshop floor. Factory-direct eliminates that layer entirely — your contract is with the people who weld the frames, stitch the silk, and wire the LEDs. The savings typically cover your sea freight and on-site installation, costs that intermediaries bill as extras.

Made in Zigong — The World’s Lantern Capital for 2,000 Years

Traditional Chinese lantern manufacturing on the workshop floor in Zigong, China

Zigong, a city in China’s Sichuan province, produces roughly 85% of the world’s festival lanterns. It has been doing so since the Han Dynasty (Wikipedia: Zigong). This is not a marketing line you find on competitor websites — it is a geographic fact. If you visit a lantern festival anywhere in the world, the sculptures almost certainly passed through this city.

Our workshop is on the ground in Zigong. Not a trading desk. Not a sourcing office. The actual floor where Q235 steel is hand-welded against full-scale paper templates, where UV-stabilised bamei satin is stretched and stitched over frames, and where IP65-rated LED arrays are wired and tested one diode at a time.

The workshop operates on a single-shift model — no overnight production runs, no rushed quality checks. Each sculpture is assigned to one lead artisan who signs off on every stage: frame welding, fabric stretching, LED installation, waterproofing, and final light-up test. A serial-numbered inspection card travels with the lantern from Zigong to your venue.

The people doing this work are second and third-generation craftspeople. Many come from families that have built lanterns in Zigong for longer than the international clients they now serve have existed. A five-metre centrepiece takes roughly 22 person-days from first steel bend to final light-up. Every installation passes a 23-point quality inspection before it leaves the floor. For a closer look at how this works, see our manufacturing process.

15 Years. 4 Continents. Real Numbers.

Lantern festival project locations across four continents

Our installations have lit up venues across the UK, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. Not “global reach” in a brochure — actual container ships carrying steel and silk from Zigong to ports in Rotterdam, Melbourne, and Dubai.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens, 2025/26. 45 custom installations across 1.2 kilometres of Grade II listed landscape. 85,000 visitors in six weeks — 25,000 more than the previous winter. Ticket revenue up 42%. The café did more business in December than July. Read the case study →

Amsterdam ARTIS Zoo, 2025/26. 140,000 visitors across an eight-week run. The trail design incorporated the zoo’s conservation messaging directly into the light sculptures. Read the case study →

Certifications and compliance. All installations meet CE (EU) and RoHS (hazardous substances) standards. Our electrical systems comply with BS 7671 (UK Wiring Regulations) and equivalent standards across EU jurisdictions. We carry full public liability insurance and provide structural calculations, fire safety certificates, and wiring diagrams as part of every project’s technical documentation package. Venues in 15+ countries have used this documentation to secure council approvals — from Grade II listed gardens in England to heritage sites in the Netherlands.

By the numbers. Founded in 2010. 30,000 m² workshop floor. 15 years of international project experience. Projects delivered to more than 80 cities across 20+ countries. Every lantern passes electrical safety testing, structural load testing, and waterproofing verification before packing.

One Team. One Contract. No Handoffs.

Installation crew assembling large sculptural lantern at a botanical garden venue

From factory floor to opening night. After manufacturing and quality inspection in Zigong, each installation is packed into custom crates and shipped via ocean freight — typically 4–5 weeks to Rotterdam or Felixstowe. Our installation crew arrives on site 2–3 weeks before opening night. Ground anchors go in first. Steel frames are assembled and bolted. Fabrics are tensioned and sealed. LEDs are wired, tested, and programmed. When the sun sets on opening night, every installation is ready — not “almost ready,” not “we will fix that tomorrow.”

Yunyi Culture Co., Ltd team working with venue operators at a lantern festival event

When a botanical garden director or zoo operations manager signs off on a six-figure winter event, the thing that keeps them awake is not the design. It is the handoff. The moment a project passes from the person who sold it to the person who is supposed to deliver it — and the brief gets lost somewhere in between.

Our process has exactly one handoff: from you to us. Every project gets a dedicated project manager who knows your venue, your timeline, and your budget. Design, 3D rendering, manufacturing, ocean freight, on-site installation, daily operation support, de-rig — one person owns the whole thing. No call centres. No ticket systems. No “let me check with the factory and get back to you.” The factory is our factory. The project manager is sitting fifty metres from the production floor.

Every installation is built for your climate. Cold-resistant cabling for Canada. UV-treated silk for the Middle East. Galvanised steel for anywhere with rain. All installations meet CE and RoHS standards. Full electrical compliance documentation is provided for your venue’s permitting process.

Our People

Chinese artisans handcrafting lantern sculptures in Zigong workshop

Second and third-generation craftspeople. Many of our artisans come from families that have built lanterns in Zigong for longer than the international venues they now serve have existed. A five-metre centrepiece takes roughly 22 person-days from first steel bend to final light-up. The skills — bending steel rod against a full-scale paper template, stretching silk without a single wrinkle, wiring LEDs so the glow reads evenly from 50 metres — are not taught in a classroom. They are passed down, father to son, mother to daughter, on the workshop floor. This is not a factory line. It is a craft tradition that happens to produce at industrial scale.

The Yunyi Culture Co., Ltd team

From design directors who produce your venue’s 3D renders before a single piece of steel is cut, to project managers who live on-site for the full installation run, to the Zigong artisans whose families have been making lanterns for generations — our team spans continents and centuries of craft tradition.

We run 4 to 6 concurrent projects per season. Capacity is deliberately limited to maintain quality. If you are planning a winter event, we recommend starting the conversation 6 to 8 months ahead.

Venues We Serve

Our installations have lit up botanical gardens, zoos, theme parks, city festivals, and private estates across four continents. Each project is custom-designed for the specific venue — we have never installed the same lantern twice.

Botanical gardens. From the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to Cambridge University Botanic Garden, UK botanical gardens represent our most established market. A winter lantern trail converts a garden’s quietest season into its highest-grossing quarter. Birmingham Botanical Gardens saw ticket revenue rise 42% during their lantern festival season.

Zoos and wildlife parks. Amsterdam ARTIS Zoo — the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, founded in 1838 — hosted a conservation-themed lantern trail that drew 140,000 visitors across 8 weeks. Zoo installations often incorporate the venue’s own animals as lantern subjects, turning conservation messaging into a walkable, illuminated experience.

City festivals and major events. The Sydney Royal Easter Show at Jamison Station drew 95,000 visitors. City-centre and major event venues benefit from the same visitor economics as gardens and zoos — extended evening dwell time, increased F&B spend, and organic social media reach from installations designed to be photographed and shared.

Christmas and seasonal light trails. For venues that want a festive-season event without the full complexity of a Chinese lantern festival, we design and install Christmas light trails — illuminated winter wonderlands with custom-themed installations, interactive elements, and narrative arcs that carry visitors from gate to exit. See our Christmas light displays for venue-specific examples.
